Tell them what they want to hear: Re-thinking assessment practices with people
experiencing homelessness

Part of the HSCWRU Homelessness Webinar Series: www.kcl.ac.uk/events/series/homelessness-series

Tell them what they want to hear: Re-thinking assessment practices with people experiencing homelessness

People experiencing homelessness often have multiple, complex needs that intersect around issues of substance use, mental and physical ill-health, offending histories and institutional care experiences. They are frequently asked to engage with assessments by multiple agencies, which may be experienced as repetitive, embarrassing, judgemental and even dangerous.

The webinar will share findings from a study which provides important insights into the experiences of assessment processes, practices and outcomes from the perspective of people experiencing homelessness. Suggestions for practice to help avoid the repetition or inducing of shame and trauma will be shared.

It will be led by Karl Mason, Senior Lecturer, MSc Social Work Course Lead, and Co-Lead Health and Social Care Research Cluster, Royal Holloway, University of London

Signing up to the book group does not commit participants to attending every session. Indeed, several people only attend occasionally – but appreciate getting the papers.
